From the Editor: The Texas Hill Country
The area known as the “Texas Hill Country” stretches roughly from San Antonio to Austin and then westward for about 100 miles. The roads range from the mild – gentle hils and sweeping curves – to the wild – don’t let y our concentration lapse for a second. Planning a visit to the area can seem overwhelming. There is so much to do, so many things to see and so many roads to ride. In this issue we help you sort through the information and narrow it down to a manageable level.
Regardless of where you start and where you end up on your Hill Country trip there are several “must see” areas;
Among them are Bandera, the Cowboy Capitol of The World.
Kerrville a bustling town on the Guadalupe River. The Guadalupe with its emerald green color, the cypress trees on each side interlacing their branches above mid-stream and the many, many places that have had small dams erected to create pristine swimming areas is, in our opinion, one of the great Crown Jewels of Texas.
Fredericksburg with it’s rich Old World traditions and great German Food is a shopper’s delight. While you are in the area don’t miss Enchanted Rock, our own granite monolith, as impressive as Stone Mountain Georgia or Ayres Rock in Australia.
Leakey and the Rio Frio (in case you didn’t know, that means COLD RIVER) and it lives up to its name. But on a hot summer day …
Camp Wood from Leakey is a short, but outstanding, motorcycle road that you will want to do over and over.
At Vanderpool visit the Lone Star Motorcyle Museum – an unexpected treat in an unexpected place.
Well, we hope you get the idea. For a weekend or for a month the Texas Hill Country will be a trip you will treasure forever.
